The Continuum of Care in Treatment
The continuum of care is an approach to treating addiction that involves guiding clients through various health services across all intensity levels. A continuum of care approach is useful because addiction isn’t straightforward. When a person has a substance use disorder, it’s a progressive, chronic disease. While it can’t technically be cured, if it’s not properly treated and managed, it can become more severe and lead to death ultimately.
With the continuum of care, the client enters a treatment system at the care level best suited to their needs. From this care level, a client can step up into a more intensive program if needed, or when they complete this level of treatment, they can move down into a lower care level.
The model of a continuum of care is built on the idea that clients can move across treatment levels.
A continuum of care is used because it increases the likelihood of avoiding relapse. It is the best way to improve the chances of a long-term recovery.
Most people seeking addiction treatment will begin with an inpatient program, following a medical detox. These are considered the most intensive and highest levels of care. In residential programs, you live on-site, your environment is structured very scheduled, and your focus is completely on your recovery. Once someone leaves an inpatient program, they may find returning to their regular life challenging if they don’t complete lower care levels. Inpatient treatment is free of temptations and triggers, whereas daily life isn’t.
A transitional environment tends to help maintain a sense of support and connection to treatment even after leaving a residential program.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Our Intensive Outpatient Program in Cincinnati
While every rehab center will have its approach to its programs, generally, an intensive outpatient program or an IOP is a step up from traditional outpatient rehab. An IOP usually includes a combination of individual and group therapy, requiring a time commitment of two or three hours a day or three to five days weekly. Family therapy can be part of an IOP treatment plan too.
Scenarios where an IOP could be the right program, include if a person is at risk of being hospitalized and a regular outpatient rehab isn’t intensive enough. The second is when you step down from a higher care level and transition from inpatient treatment to daily life.
When you participate in an intensive outpatient program, you can usually keep working and stay close to friends and family. These programs are less expensive than inpatient treatment; you can return home in the evenings.
When participating in outpatient treatment, your treatment plan usually includes behavioral therapies, counseling, and medication-assisted treatment when needed. Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) includes using medicines approved by the FDA to help treat withdrawal symptoms and substance cravings. Cravings can otherwise be distracting, interfere with treatment, and raise the risk of relapse, which is why medicines may be used.
